My late Father was French, my late Mother Indigenous. Unfortunately I did not grow up inheriting the unique cultures of the Kwakwaka'wakw (also known as Kwakuitl peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast). Nothing stopping me now! Back in 2003 my husband and I were heading out on a fishing trip to Vancouver Island (no where in particular) My father had recently passed away and my mom had asked if she could come with us! Not on the fishing trip but to take her to her "Indian Reserve" on Guilford Island and Kingcome Inlet. Plans changed and off we went., Rolled into Alert Bay and had the most awesome experience to be able to attend our first "Potlatch" which was a three day event. The word "Potlatch" means "to give". The "Potlatch" ceremony markes important occasions in the lives of the Kwakwaka'akw: the naming of children, marriage, transferring rights and privileges and mourning the dead. We then headed to my mom's Indian Reserve on Guilford. Island. What an experience! Never seen my mom so happy! Had dinner in the Long House, dug for trading beads under the old Long House, socialized with amazing family members, fires on the beach, mom reminiscing with her favourite aunty and spending a great amount of time with my Great Great Uncle Sam (pic to the left) in his carving hut! Amazing times!! It was after this experience that my interest in Indigenous art began. I started researching the "Mid Coast" art style and then created my own unique style. Still learning, still progressing....but hey I'm having such a wonderful time creating my art!
I explore in several different art mediums! Allot of my paintings have been done in acrylic paints but I also dabble in oil's, water-colours and alcohol ink. Metal art coming soon!
